How to use social media to your advantage

Social media is a powerful tool that most people use today. It lets you connect with your friends and family as well as let you post pictures and share whatever is on your mind. It can be used to help you in your career, but can also damage it as well.

Use LinkedIn to your advantage. LinkedIn works not only as a social media platform, it also works as a job search engine and an online resume. This platform is one of the most important to network with, as well as using it as a quick and easy tool to apply to jobs.

LinkedIn itself also works as a powerful tool to network. It allows you to make connections with your co-workers as well as your classmates who will be going into the same field as you. The platform also hosts plenty of useful articles to boost your profile, improve your resume and to make you stand out from other candidates.

Facebook also has a job search app where you can find jobs within your area. Building your own personal brand on social media can give you an extra edge on someone who may not.

While social media is a powerful tool for good, it also can very negative things to you and your career. It’s not uncommon for employers to look at your social media accounts before they hire you. Sharing obscene content and posting inflammatory things can get you into hot water in the business world.

Even if you are off the clock, your social media footprint follows you everywhere. 10 students from Harvard were kicked out of school for sharing racially insensitive content. Even if it is meant to be a joke posting things that can be seen as offensive can cost you your job, or an opportunity to get a job.

Sometimes it’s best to avoid the shock value or keep controversial opinions off your pages completely or hidden to the public. You don’t want to cost yourself at a dream job because of something you may have posted years ago.
