How to Set Yourself Apart as a Massage Therapist

Whether you’re studying massage therapy here at ACHT or just curious about how you can set yourself apart as a massage therapist and get the most out of your career, read on to discover ways to entice customers and turn visitors into regulars.

Once you’ve mastered your skills, the most important way to set yourself apart as a massage therapist is to make your customers feel transported into another world – or, better yet, a dream, or heaven! Although wellness is one very important reason people purpose massage, people also use massage as a way to escape from daily life. Have you ever been absorbed into a great movie, book, or musical performance? Try to re-create the escapist elements from the experiences you’ve enjoyed. Many massage therapists incorporate candles, soft lighting, and aromatherapy. Another creative thing to do is create a personalized playlist for your massages, incorporating beautiful music that lets the relaxation seep in through your customers’ ears.

Set yourself apart as a massage therapist with a calm, kind demeanor. Just as doctors practice their bedside manner, there’s no reason not to “rehearse” your professional disposition so that customers feel totally comfortable and cared for by a massage therapist who seems in control and confident. Another great way to improve your professionalism is to remember to ask your customers questions. An amazing personal touch might even be writing down some details that you remember after you see a customer, so if he or she visits you again, you can ask for a follow-up. If your customer is a parent, remember his or her children’s names. There is no sweeter sound to the ear of a parent than the name of his or her child!

Learn some basic guided meditation techniques. If your customers are coming to you to escape or relax, you can enhance their experience by starting their massage out with some techniques borrowed from guided meditation, encouraging them to breathe slowly and deeply or relax their arms and legs slowly from head to toe. This can make an incredible difference for someone who is looking for some sanctuary from the outside world.

Along those lines, you can really set yourself apart as a massage therapist by inventing your own little rituals to guide your customers through the routine of relaxation. Whether it’s something you say, a way you begin your massages, the music you play, or the way you end the session, few things are as relaxing as knowing what to expect. Every time you see a customer, gently guide him or her in and out of the session by establishing a soothing routine. After a few sessions, the repeated exposure to calming rituals will make your customers crave your touch when they remember you during daily life.
